08/30/2005: "Lumberjacks win 27-21 against tough Shoremen team"


The Minneapolis Lumberjacks opened up the 2005 season against a very tough and very stingy Duluth Shoremen squad in Duluth at PSS Stadium. After coming out flat the Lumberjack offense put it together in the 2nd quarter scoring on three consecutive drives highlighted by touchdown passes from Will Staples to Ed Reed and Issac Brown and Nate Middleton hooking up with Brown on a 25 yard strike. On the day Isaac Brown had 114 yards and 2 scores. The running game was highlighted by Robbie Johnson gaining 77 hard yards on 23 carries.
The Lumberjack Defense played well throughout the game forcing 5 fumbles and recovering 2. The also produced 2 interceptions 1 by David Smith, who led the Jacks with 8 tackles along with Tony Dupree's 8 tackle performance, and the other that sealed the game inside 1 minute to play by Tommy Waltman. Waltman also pitchd in 5 tackles. Other defensive notables where Norm Alston with 7 tackles and Lamont Powers with 2 key pass deflections.

The Jacks will now take on the 2-0 Titans at Holy Angles on Saturday the 16th.
