08/04/2006: ""A Stampede is Coming to Superior & the MFL in 2006""
The Superior Stampede Football Club will trot onto the MFL scene in 2006. Although the team is new, the staff and majority of players are not. The team is led by three investors in Team President Marty Schubitzke, Team Treasurer/Asst. Head Coach Joel Brekken, and Head Coach/Director of Operations Terry Fawcett. All three were involved with the Duluth-Superior Shoremen team that made the GPFL & MFL semi-finals in their two years of existence. Returning MFL All-Star and MLFN All-Americans include, LB Nick Farrell, DT Lincoln Holiday, and Safety Rob Smith, who was named a First Team All-American at the "Iron man " position. Smith recently caught the game winning TD in the MFL All-Star Game, and Holiday was named the Jim Marshall MVP of the game. The Stampede will play all home games at Ole Haugsrud Memorial Field on the campus of the University Wisconsin-Superior. Beer will be sold at all home games, which makes the Stampede one of the few minor league teams in the country to be able to offer beer at games! Additionally, all Stampede games, both home and away, will be broadcast by The Fan 560 WEBC radio. The Stampede will open their 2006 season with a non-league game against the Iron Range Hitmen at home on July 1st. The Hitmen were GPFL runner-ups in 2005.
