Defense Solid in Win

TBirds vs RoughRiders: Recap
Defense Solid in Win
2006-08-14
The Central Minnesota Thunderbirds won their fourth game in a row Saturday when they topped the Winona/La Crosse Roughriders 28-0.
The victory was the team's third shutout of the season and left the T-Birds with a 4-1 record in the Mid-America Football League.
"We just settled down and when we settled down, we came out with a goose egg," said defensive back Ramon Burroughs.
The game was not without some controversy, which began before the opening kickoff. Saturday's contest was scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. start and was posted that way on the Roughriders web site. T-Birds Coach Chad Baldwin was never notified of a change, but when his team began warm-ups he noticed that there was an extra half-hour on the clock that ticked down to game time.
"They're trying to get the advantage," Baldwin said after the game, which started at 7:35 p.m. "Their own Web site said 7:05. They didn't even tell us when we got here."
Despite the confusion, the Thunderbirds managed to focus on the task at hand and came out victorious.
The Thunderbirds scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and two in the fourth while holding the Roughriders scoreless. Kicker Mike Jacobs made all four extra points, but missed two field goal attempts in the game.
Mike Dietel had an impressive outing for the second week in a row. He grabbed an interception in the second quarter and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown to put the first points on the scoreboard. He later recovered two fumbles, and had two sacs.
Dietel hasn't played football for five years, but came out to join the T-Birds this season.
"I haven't played in awhile, but it's starting to feel good," he said.
Eric Tarasawicz scored the second touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run. Then the scoring came to a standstill until the fourth quarter.
Burroughs said that once the Thunderbirds stopped the Roughriders running game, it was over. Unfortunately, the offense struggled to get into the end zone.
"The defense did a great job today," Baldwin said. "That's where I expect them to play at."
In fact, Central Minnesota's defense held the Roughriders to just 71 yards of total offense, while the Thunderbirds racked up 204 yards of their own.
Sacs were credited to Jeremy Gothman and James Bruns. Jeremiah Duvall led the team with four tackles.
In the fourth quarter, quarterback Chris Esterley threw a 20-yard pass to the corner of the end zone, which was caught by newcomer Rob Neumann for a touchdown. Neumann has been a coach on the team in previous seasons, but is putting on the pads as a wide receiver this summer.
Burroughs intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 30 yards, which set up the Neumann touchdown.
"It was a nice play," Burroughs said. "It was well timed."
Eric Wessels later scored the team's final points of the game when he took a 6-yard run into the end zone to put his team ahead 28-0.
Esterley completed 13 of 25 pass attempts for 75 yards and a touchdown. He also threw one interception. His lead receiver was Neumann, who had two catches for 20 yards. David Knutson caught three passes for 19 yards, and Wessels caught one for 17 yards.
Tarasewicz had 19 carries in the game for 88 yards and a touchdown. Wessels had six carries for 25 yards, and Nate Middleton had three for 13 yards.
The Central Minnesota Thunderbirds will take the next three weeks off after the Minnesota Valley Warriors were forced to forfeit a game that was scheduled for Aug. 27. The forfeit gives the T-Birds a 5-1 overall record.
The team's next game is scheduled for Sept. 10 against the Twin Cities Titans, and Mid-America Football League playoffs will follow.
Baldwin said the T-Birds are tied with the Midwest Pioneers and the Superior Stampede with one loss each this season. However, the Pioneers and Stampede have played one more game than Central Minnesota, which would leave the T-Birds third in the league standings if all three teams win the remainder of their games.

Stampede move into first place

Superior’s Kevin Guillory breaks away from the Midwest Pioneers defense on a run in the second half Saturday in Superior. The Stampede won 24-10.
More photosAfter two early season losses, the Superior Stampede were 2-2 and looking like a nomadic herd.

Wins in consecutive weeks, including Saturday's 24-10 win over the Midwest Pioneers at Ole Haugsrud Field in Superior, has the Stampede leading the Mid-America Football League pack.

The Pioneers of Mounds View, Minn., were 4-0 in league play entering Saturday's game with the Stampede at 3-1.

"This is a big win," said quarterback Michael Spriggs, who had 78 total yards and a touchdown. "This win puts us in the driver's seat."

The Stampede (4-2) took a 7-0 lead with a 10-play, 67-yard opening drive capped by Spriggs' 9-yard touchdown run.

"Last week, we were stale and an early drive like that was a good statement," Spriggs said.

Joe Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 57 yards to the Stampede 3. After a goal-line stand, the Stampede forced a 25-yard field goal by Freddie Weinke.

Pioneers running back Brian Holmes tested a Stampede defense that had allowed only 25 yards per contest. Holmes rushed for 79 yards in the first half, but two missed field goals left the halftime score at 7-3.

"At halftime I told (Spriggs and running back Kevin Guillory) that they needed to put the guys on their backs," Stampede coach Terry Fawcett said.

The Stampede's first possession of the second half was similar to the one that began the game. Spriggs' 13-yard first down scramble set up a 37-yard Ryan Rodriguez field goal.

Guillory rushed for 127 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries, with the majority of the numbers coming after halftime.

"In the second half we went back to basics," Spriggs said. "We went to (Guillory) a lot and playmakers make plays."

Guillory had two 19-yard runs before he scored from 3 yards out with 9:06 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Less than a minute later, Holmes fumbled at the Pioneers 22 and linebacker Michael Williams picked it up and raced down the sideline to make the score 24-3.

Immediately, Spriggs and Guillory took off their pads and enjoyed the win.

"Last year we didn't have enough great players, and we added some players to go from good to great this year," Fawcett said.

Williams played for the Iron Range Hitmen last year and Spriggs came from the Duluth-Superior Shoremen.

"(Spriggs') got the credentials," Fawcett said of his quarterback that has played in the National Indoor Football League and Arena Football 2. "He put the team on his back and showed he was a great one today."

The Pioneers (5-2) were stalled most of the second half and three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties set up a first-and-40 to foil one drive.

"They are a heck of a team and there are no excuses," Pioneers coach Nate Heiser said. "A forfeit last week (to the Minnesota Valley Warriors) hurt us and we were out of sync in the first half."

Linebackers Nick Farrell had 13 tackles and Dan Turcotte Jr. had 11 tackles as the Stampede held Holmes to 29 second-half rushing yards.

Pioneers quarterback Paul Ciochetto completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Damien Rachon-Washington with less than a minute to play.

"We are in first place now and if we win out, we should be in good position," Fawcett said.

The Twin Cities Titans come to Superior next Saturday before the Stampede close the regular season with games at the Iowa Threshers and the Minneapolis Lumberjacks.

Rough Riders pull out OT win in front of NFL coach

Rough Riders pull out OT win in front of NFL coach

By Rick Solem | Winona Daily News

.
Even NFL coaches are taking in Winona/La Crosse Rough Riders football games these days.

NFL training camp starts this Friday, and football will consume the next seven months of his life.

Regardless, Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski was on hand Saturday at Maxwell Field to see the Rough Riders battle the Minnesota Maulers to a 27-21 overtime win — the first win over the Maulers for the Rough Riders in four tries.

Jeff Jagodzinski’s brother Gary, 41, was refereeing the game. The La Crosse native has been doing so for eight years.

“He said to come down and take in a football game,” Jeff Jagodzinski, 42, said. “We just enjoy being around the ball. Our dad (was a referee) for 30 years.”

Jeff Jagodzinski, a Milwaukee native, played football for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater from 1981-85.

“I played fullback,” Jeff Jagodzinski said. “But I was more of a guard with a running back’s number.”

This season will be Jeff Jagodzinski’s sixth with the Packers, but first since the 2003-04 season.

He was with the Atlanta Falcons the past two seasons.

In the game, Rough Riders’ running back Keantay Jackson scored the winning touchdown from five yards out in overtime.

He also scored the game-tying touchdown with 3:37 left from three yards out — his first carry after sitting for a quarter with a cramp.

Big plays gave the Rough Riders an early 14-0 lead.

David Dechant hit Donte Pettis for a 38-yard score. Pettis can thank Deejay Spencer for the opening with a great block.

Aaron Woelfel caught the next score from Dechant on a 14-yard fade to the corner. The play was set up by a Dechant-Woelfel 50-yard tight end screen.

The game-tying score from Jackson was set up by a 37-yard reverse pass from Jed Neal to Woelfel.

Neal was almost tackled trying to throw in the backfield, pulled the ball back in and then fired a laser to Woelfel to the 3-yard line.
