Press Release
Source: North American Football League

North American Football League Championship in Las Vegas
Wednesday, October 17, 2007, 12:00 pm ET

The 9th NAFL National Championship Game is scheduled for November 10 in Las Vegas

Eden Prairie, MN, October 17, 2007>, /PRNewswire/ -- The North American Football League will be descending upon Las Vegas, Nevada in approximately three weeks for their annual National Championship event. The North American Football League is the largest Minor-League Football organization of its kind in the world. With over 140 teams nationwide this truly is a “National Championship.”

Last year’s Champion the Dallas Diesel are making a strong bid for a repeat, and will attempt to avenge their only loss of the year in this week’s third round Match-up with the Bay Area Gamblers. The King County Jaguars, a powerhouse team from Seattle, are also looking to get back to the Championship game, having been there in 2005.

Another Past Championship team that is still in the play-offs are the Kane County Eagles from the Chicago area. Kane County won the NAFL Championship in 2004 and have survived two rough road games in the first two rounds of the play-offs. They will travel to play the undefeated Pittsburgh Colts this week.

Last year’s runners-up the Nashville Storm host the Alabama Lightning in a pivotal battle in the South, and the Asheville Grizzlies welcome the Georgia Generals to the “Mountaintop” for their match-up this weekend.

The Favorite to this point however, has to be the Central Penn Piranha. Undefeated at home in over 100 contests, they host the team that knocked them out of the play-offs last season the South Jersey Lynx.

The NAFL All-Star games will also be held the same weekend and feature the best players in America that play “For the Love of the Game” and not for a paycheck. These All-Star games attract talent scouts from around the country and often NAFL players are invited to Pro Scouting Combines as a result of their performance here.

The 2007 NAFL National Championship is the 9th Championship game for the league. The previous three Championships were held at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, and before that the games were played at the home field of one of the Championship teams.

Winona/La Crosse Rough Riders outside linebacker, Tony Ford, eyes up Cedar Valley quarterback Will Staple during their game at Maxwell Field Saturday in Winona. (Photo by Andrew Link/Winona Daily News)

RoughRiders linebacker uses intensity, speed to earn respect

By Matt Huss | Winona Daily News

.
Tony Ford is far from the stereotypical football player.

The Winona/La Crosse RoughRiders semiprofessional football team’s starting weak-side linebacker is listed at 5-foot, 7 inches and 170 pounds, but even that’s being generous.

“I actually weigh 160,” Ford said. “I tried to bulk up by lifting weights and everything, but I just couldn’t do it. It’s my natural weight.”

But in a league where he’s easily the smallest starting linebacker, Ford is quickly earning respect and proving that size just doesn’t matter.

As a starting defensive back for Winona Senior High School, Ford was a two-time all-conference selection and led the Winhawks in tackles his junior and senior years.

He graduated from WSHS in 2003 but never pursued football at another level until he decided to try out for the RoughRiders in 2004.

Of course, the first thing anyone focused on was his size.

“I underestimated him because his size was all you could see right away,” Winona/La Crosse coach Paul Anderson said. “But after we starting hitting in the first couple of practices, he gained everybody’s respect real quick.”

Eventually, the accolades came as well, as Ford was selected to compete in the All-American Bowl by coaches and league officials for the third consecutive year after a 2006 season in which he led the RoughRiders in tackles with 73.

“He’s quiet, but he’s got that look, that intensity, and you know he’s into it,” Anderson said. “He’s a football player, plain and simple. And he’ll hit ya.”

In a lot of ways, Ford’s small stature has been a big advantage on the field.

“Football is like wrestling; if you hit them at the legs, they really can’t go anywhere,” said Ford, who wrestled in high school and still competes in tournaments every summer. “I use my size to my advantage. I don’t hit anybody high, because, well, everyone is taller than me.

“But nobody’s tougher than me. That’s my mindset.”

Off the field, however, it would be difficult to guess that Ford is respected as a fiercely competitive linebacker, especially considering his desired field of work and the stereotypes that come with it.

When he’s not playing football or working at Midtown Foods or spending time at home with his wife, Julie, and their 7-week-old son, Nolen, Ford is taking classes and working toward his degree in nursing.

“Some guys give me crap about it, and there are bad stereotypes,” Ford said. “But there’s a big demand for male nurses these days, and they have to earn their respect.”

Been there, done that.

Raiders'offense sacked by Pioneers

Raiders'offense sacked by Pioneers
By Peter Jackel
Journal Times

It was just one of those flukish things for the Racine Raiders, something coach Jordan Kopac doesn’t care to ever see again.
With quarterbacks Dan Novotny and Gordy Bittner not able to make the trip because of previous commitments, the Raiders lost to Midwest (Minn.) Pioneers 21-10 Saturday night at Arden Hills, Minn. The Raiders (2-2) took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but slowly allowed this North American Football League game to slip away.
The Pioneers (1-1) defeated Racine for the first time after losing three previous matchups.
With no experienced quarterback available, Kopac was forced to rely on Brett Statema, who played for the Racine Horsemen last season. Lacking the experience and height of the 6-foot-4 Novotny, the 6-0 Statema struggled, completing seven of 16 passes for 42 yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions. He also was sacked four times by a Pioneers defense that blitzed often.
Bryan Jennings Jr. gave the Raiders a decent ground game with 57 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, but he was about the extent of the offense. No other Raiders running back had any positive rushing yards. The Raiders had just 33 yards in the first half and 105 in the game — 147 less than the Pioneers.
"This was really my first experience playing like a one-armed paper hanger," said Kopac, who had wide receiver Sam D’Alie as an emergency backup to Statema. "We only could run. I never had that experience before and I certainly don’t want to have it again.
"When we get Dan back, we’re going to get back on track. We’re not disappointed at all. We’re only disappointed that we lost. We’re not disappointed in the performance of our players. We’re just looking forward to getting our quarterback back."
Joel DaPra gave the Raiders an early 3-0 lead and Jennings made it 10-0 with a 5-yard touchdown run. But then the Pioneers took control on their home field behind wide receiver Joseph Mapson, who caught eight passes for 116 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown reception.
Linebacker Jamie Isome led the Raiders defensively with five solo tackles, four assists, a half sack and 5 1/2 hurries. Linebacker Brian Sylvas added four solos and three assists.

Rough Riders first game Saturday

Rough Riders first game Saturday (06/13/2007)
By Sarah Elmquist

It’s the thrill of helmets clashing, shoulders barreling forward, trusting your man is going to be waiting at the 30-yard line, picking up at the end of your throw.
It’s camaraderie, companionship, nitty-gritty hard work.
It’s football.
The Rough Riders Winona/La Crosse team is heading into its fifth season, showing the community that they’re here to stay, pushing up the ranks of the semipro Mid America Football League.
And maintaining a semipro team for the long-term can be tough, said head coach Paul Anderson. Balancing sponsors, a commitment from the community, and players who come from all walks of life is often what puts minor league teams to bed. But as the Riders head into their fifth year, they’re showing they’ve got one thing in common that can keep them going against the odds: they love the game.
“It’s like a melting pot,” said Anderson of his players. Some are former college players, some only played in high school. Some have graduated and are working in the community, some are raising families. A handful aspire to head to a higher league in the future, and they all range in age from 19 to the late 30s.

Pioneers 2007 Update

If you follow minor league football and the Mid-America Football League, you probably already know that the Midwest Pioneers have a new owner. The new ownership group is Sport and Spine, LLC.

But you probably didn't know that the man behind the group is none other than Eric Wessels. The former all-star running back for the Minnesota Maulers, Twin Cities Titans and Central Minnesota Thunderbirds -- as well as reality television star of Average Joe and other concepts -- has taken over the reins of one of minor league football's most consistently successful franchises.

In a sport where most new teams are formed and fizzle within just a couple of seasons, the Pioneers -- under their fourth ownership group -- have now been around since 2002. The Pioneers have won three of the past four league championships -- including the 2006 title -- and played for a national championship in 2003 against the Brooklyn Mariners.

Wessels' involvement, and his extensive experience in the ins and outs of semi-pro football, will help the Pioneers continue their winning ways into the future.

Wessels bought the team from Scott Ramsdell, Tony Aitkin, Matt Troyer and Dan Mitchell and hopes to build on the terrific organizational and competitive foundation the previous owners established. Some exciting changes include:

* A $100 player fee. Unlike other minor league teams that charge players much more, in fees or sponsorships, to play, the Pioneers are asking for one of the lowest player fees in football. Returning players who still have their jersey will pay only $100 in 2007. New players will pay $100 plus a jersey fee.

* Affordable tickets. Bucking the trend to pass higher costs onto the fans, the Pioneers plan to charge only $5 for adults per game. In addition, a six-game season ticket will cost only $25, Wessels announced this week. This has an upside for players as well; players who sell four $25 season tickets in advance to friends, family and fans will not have to pay a player fee.

* Web site updates. Expect more photos and more Pioneers news, with more in-depth player biographies and fun features about the Pioneers history and season to come.

* A return of the golden voice. Yes, folks, talented PA guy Brian Schulz has rejoined the Pioneers for 2007, as both general manager and game announcer. Long considered the best in local minor league football, Schulz is once again part of the Pioneers family.

* Even more exciting changes to the Pioneers' game schedule and home game environment are in the works. So stay tuned.

The Midwest Pioneers are now holding regular practices every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to around 8 p.m. The practices are held at Northwestern Health and Sciences University located at 2501 W. 84th Street, Bloomington Mn. 55431. Here is a link to a map of the field http://www.nwhealth.edu/aboutnw/direct.html#
Any questions? Please call Coach Nate Heiser at 612-481-6577. Feel free to visit the team website located at www.midwestpioneers.com for team news and regular updates.

T-Birds vs Stampede: Recap
Heather Reinhart
2006-09-24
The Central Minnesota Thunderbirds got the win they needed on Saturday when the T-Birds topped the visiting Superior Stampede 30-0.
It was the fifth shutout of the season for the Thunderbirds, who improved to 7-1 with the win.But the victory did not come as easily as the score would indicate.
The Thunderbirds went four-and-out on their first possession and handed the ball to the Stampede, who marched down the field and threatened to score. The Thunderbirds defense regained control just in time, and kept Superior out of the end zone.
"We were adjusting and we were tweaking things and we finally figured out what we had to do to stop them," Coach Chad Baldwin said.

Wins in consecutive weeks, including Saturday's 24-10 win over the Midwest Pioneers at Ole Haugsrud Field in Superior, has the Stampede leading the Mid-America Football League pack.

The Pioneers of Mounds View, Minn., were 4-0 in league play entering Saturday's game with the Stampede at 3-1.

"This is a big win," said quarterback Michael Spriggs, who had 78 total yards and a touchdown. "This win puts us in the driver's seat."

The Stampede (4-2) took a 7-0 lead with a 10-play, 67-yard opening drive capped by Spriggs' 9-yard touchdown run.

"Last week, we were stale and an early drive like that was a good statement," Spriggs said.

2007 Midwest Pioneers Combine

I would like to cordially invite you to the 2007 Midwest Pioneers Combine. Our quest for a fourth MFL Championship begins now.

The Midwest Pioneers will be holding the 2007 Player Combine on Saturday February 17th. The Combine will begin promptly at 4:00pm and end at 6:00pm. The Combine will take place at Bethel College inside the Sport and Recreation Center (SRC). All current or interested players are strongly encouraged to attend. There will be a non-refundable $5.00 fee (Cash Only) to be paid upon entry by all participants. Participating in the 2007 Midwest Pioneers Combine does not guarantee a roster spot with the 2007 Midwest Pioneers.

A 2007 Letter of Intent (LOI) must be completed to participate in the Combine. The LOI will be held for 10 days. If the player contacts Pioneer personnel and makes a formal request to be released, the player will be released of the LOI. After 10 days, the LOI will be enforced. The Combine will be a “pro-style combine” with several individual graded stations along with position specific stations.

The surface of the SRC is a poured, "court type" coating. No cleats will be allowed, running, basketball or cross training shoes are recommended.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 612-741-0431, via e-mail at scott@midwestpioneers.com or visit the Pioneers website at www.midwestpioneers.com .

Please visit http://www.bethel.edu/graphics/maps/Bethelmaps.pdf for a detailed map of Bethel College.

See you on the 17th!

Scott Ramsdell
